The Holiday Season, depending on your Faith.

Greetings from cold San Diego, with frost on the ground.  Who knows we may have a white Xmas morning next week.

Happy Hannakuh, to my Jewish friends.  Blessings to my other faith friends.

Christmas has a weird feeling this year. Interesting,  contact by some has been so few we feel like they are slipping away and we are miss them.  Distance makes a difference, but my parents never let distance be a major problem we had to keep in touch with our elders. Dad and Mom mandated it from when small.  When distance is felt yet the people are close it is hard.  When Distance applies but can't be helped it does not seem to bother as bad.

We gathered with family that lived near us always. Some times just my Aunt and Uncle and their boys until some of Mom's family migrated to California also.  Then we had to make sure we did not leave out our Aunts and Uncles, no matter where they lived. Wyoming, Iowa, Colorado, Oregon, New Mexico, Nebraska.

As the families grew the states of Washington, Montana, Nevada, Arizona and Oklahoma was added.
Then came Kansas and Pennsylvania and Ohio and Minnesota, South Dakota, not to leave out Idaho and AK and HI.

When Korea happened in War, we had cousins all over the globe.  Just like when we had WW2 and I was to small to remember more than the planes flying over and the coming and going of Uncles and uniforms and the black outs and the Coast Watch. We did get to have my Aunts stay with us at times due to husbands deployments or hospitalizations during the War and afterwards for recovery.

I remember toward the end of the  1940's I think maybe 46 or 47, my sister and I both got dolls. My Aunt made the doll clothes, Thank You Aunt Etta. A dear friend helped with a doll bed, home made.
I remember the stocking had an orange and a walnut and a peppermint stick candy cane, & a pair of socks and ribbons for our hair. There may have been ribbon candy in the stocking also.

We had homemade fudge and divinity for candy and rolled and designed cookies. Fruit cake and
mince meat pie (the real kind) made with meat and raisins and nuts and seasonings.  When older I helped can the Mincemeat in the early fall for Xmas use.  We also had Brownies and Blondies, a bar cookie with out Chocolate.

We also invited neighbors whom were elderly and alone or took food to them.

This topic came up when I asked a grandchild if they knew the significance of the orange and walnut in the stocking. For many when we were very young it was almost all the child received with a Candy Cane.

Remember during the War there was rationing, of many food products and other goods.

What do you remember of  your early Christmas's?

Documenting Thanksgiving 2015

The day started early and ended late. In a nut shell it was a great day shared by many.

But that does not document the day.

Attendees: Candy Pentico Murillo, Bob Jeffers, Joe Murillo, Wyatt Murillo and Sara., Stephan Murillo, Nicole and Clementine Murillo, Billi Jo Pentico and Zack Allen, Roberta Jones Wright Davis ( sis) and husband Alan Davis. Of course there was my husband Fred and self.

Alan' had family from Heather's side at their home.

Ed had Peggy's families at their home.

Don and Liz went from Fowlerville, Mi. to Monee, Ill to share with her brother's family.

We had: Turkey and Ham, some can not have turkey, we had white and sweet potatoes, green beans and asparagus, cranberries jellied and whole, dinner rolls, Hawaiian and regular potato rolls. Sparkling Ciders and coffee and tea, and some beer and some wine.

BJ went to Kaiser Zion and took Mary a plate of ham and special made mashed potatoes and asparagus for her.  Not forgetting her cranberries.

Every one was to full for desert but some was had later in the evening that did not have to wander to another home. Nicole's pumpkin pie went so fast I am glad I at least had a taste,

The topper was learning that Fred's sister would be returning from the hospital with a brace and back to us in rare form.  She came home Friday afternoon.

My bronchitis was last had in February, must be the erractic weather and setting under the AC for days at Zion.

Ed and Peggy came to visit Friday late, as did Bertie and Alan return from visiting Grandkids in Oceanside and Camp Pendleton.  The left overs are slowly disappearing.

Bertie has reached home safely in AZ. Hope Don and family done same in MI.

Dale called this morning. Only one sibling I did not hear from. May God Bless them All.

You may want to.......Document your Thanksgiving........

You may want to document your Thanksgiving.  No idea who will or won't be with us in the next year.

It is the season to think of others, yes it is.  So will you remember each guest with a passing comment of will you take some pictures or maybe write a poem?

Maybe you will write a synopsis of your day or the week leading up to Thanksgiving.  It surely will bring many thoughts to the forefront.

How did you decide what vegetable to have, what type of dinner roll? Do you do Ham and Turkey for those not able to eat turkey? Or do you do a roast or goose?

You see there were many choices you made whether it was consciously or not.  Do you do mashed potatoes, scalloped potatoes, yams or sweet potatoes?

In doing all this are you leaving a trail so that your grandchildren can go back and remember what they were not sure of what they did?

Home made Cranberry sauce or store bought with or with out whole cranberries. Or did you plan a Cranberry salad made as a jello dish?

Remember in the spring we discussed using a plain table cloth and have all the guests sign it in memory of the year and it gets past down to a younger family member for future memories?

So many ideas so few time.  I hope you at least do some of this for your future generations.

Native American Ancestry, ??? Fold 3 Has Free

Having come in from brunch and was able to read this. Hope it excites you as much as it does me.

Free Access to the Native American Collection

Do you have Native American ancestry? Or are you interested in Native American history? Then explore Fold3's Native American Collection for free November 1-15.

Have you found an ancestor in Fold3's Native American collection? Tell us about it! Or get started exploring the Native American Collection here.

It has a list of six major sources to look at.

Having one line  proven and more to go.  MTDNA proves lineage on Grandma Foulk Jones Norris side.

We have proven on Jones side very early.  But want to see more documentation.

Talking to Family Tree dna people.  It is hard to go back earlier for one time incidents.

When the family's children marry back into the tribe then it solidifies the line better, one of the Jones or maybe two of the Jones daughters did this. Hurray, and Thanks Cousins.

This is truly a blessing to be able to see what they have at Fold 3.

Family Recipe Friday, Altered.

Family Recipe Friday, Altered

My Mother made awesome Chili.  Most of us in the family love to eat this dish.

Husband can no longer have much tomato, so I have worked on some variants that maybe

 will taste good.

Today I think I have accomplished it. He ate two bowls and really liked it.

 Here is what I did.

 Ingredients:
 1/4 of Green pepper, chopped
  1/3 of red pepper, chopped
1/3 of large yellow onion, chopped
2 large stalks of celery, chopped
simmered in olive oil and then added 1/4 c water to finish semi softening.

added diced 6 oz of cooked steak, 3/4 cup
added diced 8 oz of cooked veal, 1 cup

when the vegtables were softened a bit I added a
1/2  tsp. chopped garlic from jar
1/3 cup of water so items not stick

   letting it simmer,

then I tried these new beans husband bought

Bush's canned Chili Beans ( great northern beans)
it has mild chili flavor. I wanted to use Black Beans but daughter won't eat them.
After adding the beans I added about 2/3C of water so it would be semi soupy but not runny.
I let it simmer until flavor mixed about an hour.

Took about 1/2 hour to prepare with the cutting, chopping, browning and melding all together.
Let it simmer low for another half hour and it was ready.

Amazed at how good it tasted for a  tomato less chili.
I love a good  hot spicy chili with tomato but have learned to adjust since tomato is taboo for
     husband.

I would add more Chili powder for stronger flavor but he was very happy. I used to use Jalapeno's
at least one chopped into the fresh ingredients.seedless.

Seminar's are they worth it? I think the proof is in the Blog

We are preparing for our annual Fall Seminar.  At one time we did two a year but it is better done in workshops so we ended up deciding.

So every month we give you a work shop either at the Bonita-Sunnyside Library, generally 1st  Saturday afternoons 1 to 4pm or Lemon Grove Library on 3rd Wednesday, evening 6 to 8 pm.. Randy does a Breaking Brick Walls event once a month on  2nd Wednesdays. 12 to 2 pm, CVL on 4th.  We do all this for free.

We are a service orientated organization.  So when our funds were built up we opted to start funding small Scholarships for the Sweetwater Union High School District Seniors.

The Scholarships have grown from a $75. to $500 and some times two of them or something in between.  The money we make at our Seminar is what is put towards the scholarship or scholarships.

Many are not sure a Seminar is worth the $45 member or $50 non member fees.

I am sharing with you that many places charge $45 for one hour and some charge as much as $90 for an hour of information.

Personally having never gone to a Seminar and not come home with a good bit of new ideas and plans for research. I believe in Seminars.

The one planned has four topics.  The going rate being from $45 to $90 a talk that would be $360. at the high end and $180 at the lower end.  Plated hot meal $20. Not having to juggle food, cane, drink etc makes it an excellent meal.

We are only charging $45 for members and $50 for non members.  You can also join our society and get our newsletter and all the information from our workshop events and not live here.  Many places do not have Genealogical or Historical Groups and some are very minimalistic.  Our  dues are very reasonable.

We have moved from everything manual to Wild Apricot for help on events etc. You can post questions and learn of coming events way ahead with this feature.

Taking $180 + dinner and deduct your fee and you are getting more than half price off the fee for attending a multi Seminar.

Here is  hoping you will sign up to learn about Italian, Scottish, German and the Ancestral Migrating Patterns to find Church Records.

Reviews on Genealogical Programs by James Tanner of the Genealogy's Star blog

I can not copy his blog but I can refer you to it so you can read his information for anyone and everyone who is not familiar with some of our Genealogical Programs.

Today Mr. Tanner wrote a great easy to read and understand blog about some programs.

Sharing that I myself use: MyHeritage.com, started with Geni.com, and Ancestry.com for a tree.
I also use Reunion for Mac.

I will share that if I had a PC I would rush to Roots Magic and use it with My Heritage as my basics.

Having not ventured into Family Search's Tree or Wiki's tree program.

Started with PAF for MAC long ago then had FTMaker, then MAC Computer brought me to Reunion. Jamboree introduced me to Geni.com long ago. Then David H. introduced us to MyHeritage.com.  Wow what a great program.  In the mix at Jamboree I attended a ROOTS MAGIC event with Bruce Buzbee.  Have half hankered for a PC again ever since.  Even thought of a Android device for putting it on.

I love how it works and how My Heritage works the best of all of them.

Go here and read what James Tanner has said for his thoughts.

Genealogy's Star

What Do the Reviews Have to Say About Genealogy Programs?

Thanks Mr. Tanner for posting this so I can share your knowledge with those who haven't subscribed to your blog before.

Thanks to Randy Seaver sharing about James Tanner a little more than a year ago with me.

He is up there with Judy Russell in informative information for basic genealogists, etc.

More Weird News, Ancestry Just Keeps Doing

Ok, hoping your day starts in a jolly mood.  After all it is the second day of Fall.
Does that matter to you, probably not, but we are advancing towards winter when many
spend more time in research because the garden, yard or  out door chores are more minimal.

The other day Randy Seaver wrote about all these sources taken away. I read it and went to my site, all seemed well. I am speaking about Ancestry.com.

Yesterday after coming home from a mid day trip to  our new Local City Library of San Diego,
I wanted to add and check something on my Ancestry tree. I also wanted to get back to a person whom was working with me to find where we linked.

Would you believe the page opened up to something strange. I went to check for Shaking leaves and
there was no icon to push no place to find it. I was looking for other things and they were not there either.

Ancestry, why I ask did you ask us to reply  to your survey to make things better if you continue to
abuse your clients?

There was never anything wrong with the "Shaking Leaves", the problem was that your (Ad) implied everything a newbie found was correct and their lineage.  Two complete different things.

I do not hate Ancestry.com I use it nearly every other day generally. Some days I do not work genealogy on line at all. I spend time reading books and sorting documents for missed clues.

So the bright colors in our trees are nice, it shows the people better and maybe will be easier to
explain to newbies the placement of the family when they start their tree.

What did  you do with my other things?  It seems I pay you a healthy fee for use of your facility and I expect you to do it well and professionally.

Massive changes such as what opened to me at 4 p m yesterday were not up to my standards of you as a company. It seems I have lost more information and this is the second time.

Starting at age 12 by hand and worked with Mom, migrated out on my own and due to a failed system I lost much by not having the right knowledge to back it up. Second time I lost was when the back up system died.  Trusting a company to handle things, no wonder I worry about the CLOUD, and other ways of saving.  Now I am struggling with my relationship with this company and how it treats it's clients, whom without I am not sure would survive.

My tree is separated, I had to hand place the tree portion I wanted and it did not give me data I had stored there.   If  you have Ancestry.com check your trees and data files.

At this point the only thing I liked was the color coded names in the tree, but where is my tree in complete?

Information for Fall,

Information for Fall

Would love to have you all pop over to the  UpFront with NGS and read their recent post.

Archives Corps------ Saving what is in danger of disappearing

UpFront with NGS

Family Tree University is also posting some interesting news you may want to partake in.

Sept 18 to 20, 2015..  Family Tree University's Fall 2015 Virtual Genealogy Conference

My thoughts are great topics by great speakers and researchers..

The Price is out of my bracket so probably out of many others.  As I was preparing to sign up I saw the cost and about fell off my chair.

So wish some of this could be done at minimal to no cost.  Having used to give these activities, what it cost me was time for presentation creating, presenting and responding to questions. I sat at my computer at home.

Please super great people try in the future to think of a more reasonable fee.

If you can afford it you will gain a lot of knowledge but at this time I can not.

Fire has damaged 4+ family members homes and jobs and a couple of deaths have changed how I look at what I am doing.

Blessings.
